The St Barths Bucket 2017

The St Barths Bucket is one of the highlights of the superyacht sailing regatta calendar and, amid eager anticipation from the international yachting community, the event returns from 16th-19th March 2017. The regatta provides a congenial atmosphere as seafarers from the world over gather for the opportunity to sail large yachts to peak performance against a beautiful Caribbean backdrop. Sailors must apply to enter the St. Barths Bucket, which usually limits the number of participating yachts to a maximum of 30-40. This annual Caribbean regatta is especially renowned for the sportsmanship of participants, its fun atmosphere, and the magnificent array of vessels on display.

The Sailing Yachts on Display
The fleet of yachts that congregates on the stunning French island of St Barths comprises a variety of classic and contemporary vessels, which are designed for both racing and leisure. The yachts are divided into four classes: Gazelles, Elegantes, Mademoiselles, and Grande Dames. Specific courses are determined on the day of the race, but most routes lead participating to circumnavigate the island. Generally speaking, each competing vessel exceeds one hundred feet in length (30.5m); but despite these restrictions, some smaller boats are invited under the ‘Grandfather Clause.’ This means that they are allowed to race according to the discretion of the Race Committee, whose primary concern is the safety of all those involved.

Friendly Competition
Despite the polite gentlemen’s spirit of the event, there is still plenty of competitive action to keep crews alert and the crowds entertained. The superyachts that surround the island during the St Barths Bucket are just as eye-catching as the competing vessels. Fortunately, the fun doesn’t end when the yachts stop sailing; the festive atmosphere continues as night falls and after-parties and fundraising events commence on the yachts and in the port’s bars and restaurants.
